  • Brown head with yellow spots
  • Yellow or orange middorsal stripe on each side of body on scale rows 2 and 3 (counting from the belly scales up)
  • Keeled scales
  • Nonvenomous
  • Diet: fish, frogs and other aquatic vertebrates, insects, and earthworms
  • Habitat: grassy areas near ponds and streams
  • Distribution: Black Hills
